Improve dog and puppy care and related product sales.

At over 75 million, the number of pet dogs in the United States is second to only to the country’s 88 million pet cats. Some scientists believe the reason why people are so attached to their dogs is that these animals display such loyalty to humans. Dogs are also very smart, with the ability to understand approximately 160 words. This chapter will give associates a better understanding of dogs and increase their confidence when selling puppies and/or related products.

Even if your store does not sell live pets, your team should know enough about their care to help customers diagnose problems and explain how to keep their pets healthy and happy. Pet Store Pro’s animal care chapters cover in-store care for nine pet categories and provide associates with a knowledge base they can share with customers.

After completing the Dogs chapter, associates should be able to:

  • Examine puppies and identify possible health problems.
  • Care for the puppies in your store.
  • Describe general dog and puppy characteristics.
  • Communicate their basic needs to customers.
  • Recommend equipment and add-on sales items for dogs and puppies.
  • Identify and distinguish popular breeds.

The Dogs chapter covers the basics of caring for puppies in your store and communicating the basic needs of dogs and puppies to customers. Topics include feeding and nutrition guidelines, housing requirements, cleaning and sanitation, socialization and grooming.
